Hello everyone! I’m @olivertomolife and I’ve studied abroad in Kaohsiung!
I think I have the impression that many people in Taiwan speak English.
In Taiwan, many people speak English, so I would like to tell you something if you are interested in learning more than one language in one study abroad experience.
As someone who has studied abroad, I’m going to tell you if it’s possible to learn two languages in one semester!
I hope you find this information useful, so please read through it.
I experienced a working holiday in Kaohsiung for a year from February 2020. I am currently writing a blog based on that experience.
By reading this article, you’ll know if you should learn English or Chinese in Taiwan!
Should I study English and Chinese in Taiwan?
In conclusion, I would not recommend studying English and Chinese in Taiwan.
This is because Chinese is used almost exclusively outside of Taiwan’s tourist areas, so even if you study them at the same time, you won’t have many opportunities to output your knowledge.
Of course, there are English learners in Taiwan, so there are ways such as participating in social gatherings with them, but this is limited to big cities, and there are none in rural areas.
When I was studying abroad, I brought English reference books from Japan and tried to study English as well.
However, I had my hands full with studying Chinese, so I ended up only going to language exchange meetings.
So what I can say is that it is difficult to study English and Chinese unless you are prepared to do so.
So, how many people in Taiwan can speak English?
What is the percentage of people who speak English in Taiwan?
It is known that the percentage of people who can speak English in Taiwan is high, especially among young people.
This is due to the introduction of bilingual education, which the government has set as a goal for 2030.
In addition, the barrier to learning English is also low, as people start using English names when they enter kindergarten.
On the other hand, it is also true that few older people can speak English.
For this reason, I believe that Chinese should be the first language to learn in Taiwan.
For those who still want to learn English
There is only one university in Taiwan where you can learn multiple languages, and it is located in Kaohsiung.
It is called Wenzao University, and it has 9,000 students who can study a wide range of languages including English, German, and French.
It is also known as a university where English is used in most of the classes.
There are also many partner universities overseas, making it easy to study abroad.
If you can speak English and Chinese at the university level, I think you have the option to consider it.
- There are many English-speaking people in Taiwan’s big cities.
- Young people tend to speak English.
- Multiple languages are difficult to acquire
