Hello everyone! I’m @olivertomolife and I’ve studied abroad in Kaohsiung!
Did you know that in Taiwan, they often use syllabary in daily lives?
I’m sure there are people who are worried about not having learned it before studying abroad.
In this article, I’m going to tell you whether or not you should study the Chinese syllabary before you study abroad!
I will also introduce the origins and study methods of the Chinese syllabary for those who do not understand it.
If you are planning to study abroad in Taiwan, this is a must-see!
I have been on a working holiday in Kaohsiung for one year since 2020. Currently, I am writing a blog based on that experience.
By reading this article, you’ll get to know about Taiwan’s annotations!
Should you study the Chinese syllabary before studying in Taiwan?
As it turns out, you don’t need to study the Chinese syllabary before studying in Taiwan.
This is because when foreigners learn Chinese, they are usually taught using the Pinyin alphabet.
The reason why this way of teaching is so common is that it is easier to teach to foreigners who are learning Chinese for the first time.
In Taiwan, there are language schools that teach Chinese from the phonetic alphabet, but there are only a few of them.
In Taiwan, there are some language schools that teach Chinese from the phonetic alphabet, but they are few and far between, so there is no need to study the phonetic alphabet beforehand.
As a side note, if you are planning to work in Taiwan in the future, it would be useful to know the Chinese syllabary.
For example, Taiwanese computers have a phonetic keyboard, so you don’t have to be in a hurry when you use your computer for work.
What are the phonetic sounds used in Taiwan?
The Taiwanese syllabary is a phonetic alphabet that represents the Chinese language with a total of 37 characters, consisting of 21 voiceless characters and 16 rhyming characters.
It was invented by several educators around 1913, and started to be officially used in Taiwan in the late 1990s.
It is said that without the knowledge of accurate pronunciation, the note sounds cannot be written correctly, and therefore can be pronounced more beautifully.
For this reason, I have often been told by my Taiwanese friends, “If you want to learn correct pronunciation, you should study Chinese phonetics.
If you are going to live in Taiwan, it may be easier to live if you learn it.
There are three ways to study Chinese phonetics that even beginners can practice
1 Youtube
In Taiwan, people study Japanese syllables from childhood, so there are many videos available.
The videos are aimed at children, but the words are also suitable for beginners, making it easier to learn.
It’s also the best way to learn easily in terms of being able to watch them when you have time, no matter where you are.
2 Choose a language school course
There is also a way to focus on learning Chinese phonetics from the start of your study in Taiwan.
At each language school, you can choose to participate in a course to study phonetics.
This is a good option for those who want to learn it efficiently, since it can be studied intensively in a short period of time.
3 Practice on your smartphone or computer
There is a way to study by yourself by changing each keyboard to a note.
A friend of mine used that method to teach himself how to get the annotations.
He said that if you just try to use it and learn the combinations, you will understand it better.
I think this is the best study method for those who want to learn little by little.
Conclusion
- You don’t need to study Chinese phonetics before studying in Taiwan.
- If you want to work or go to university in Taiwan in the future, it is convenient to learn.
