Hello everyone. I’m @olivertomolife and I’ve studied abroad in Sydney!
In Sydney, where prices are high, there are many opportunities to cook for yourself, so you need to know the difference between supermarkets.
I often cooked for myself while I was studying abroad, and I used to buy different things at different supermarkets.
The products sold in each differ slightly, so be sure to check them out!
I studied abroad in Sydney for a year starting in 2018. Now I am writing a blog about my experience.
By reading this article, you’ll get to know about some of Australia’s famous supermarkets!
What are the characteristics of Australian supermarkets?
1 Self-checkout
Most supermarkets in Australia have self-checkout systems.
This means that you don’t have to wait in line at certain times of the day, so you can save time.
The self-checkout system is not so popular in Japan, so it was hard to get used to it at first, but I soon got used to it.
Please note that ALDI is the only store that does not have self-checkout.
2 Eco bags
In Australian supermarkets, shopping bags are charged.
For this reason, many supermarkets sell eco-bags.
They vary from simple to well-designed, and many people use eco-bags.
So when you go to the supermarket, don’t forget your eco-bag!
3 Card Payment
Australian supermarkets accept card payments.
It’s a convenient way to save time from paying cash at the cashier.
You can also pay by card at ALDI, which does not have self-checkout.
Four major supermarkets in Australia
1 Coles
Coles is one of the leading supermarkets in Australia and is as big as Woolworths.
I think you can find a Coles supermarket in any place in Australia.
This is a supermarket that Australians are familiar with, as it is often seen on TV commercials.
Personally, I recommend this supermarket because their fried chicken is better than other supermarkets.
2 Woolworth
Woolworths is a supermarket that is as large as Coles and is often conveniently located.
Some of the stores located in train stations allow you to charge your IC card, which is helpful when you are busy.
By the way, there is a supermarket in New Zealand similar to Woolworths lol.
It’s just a different name, but the logo is almost the same, so maybe it’s a subsidiary.
3 ALDI
ALDI is a German-originated supermarket with cheap prices and a wide selection of products.
However, it is a pity that it is located in a slightly inconvenient place in Sydney.
In Australia, supermarkets are usually self-checkout, but this supermarket does not have self-checkout, so it may take some time when it is crowded.
This is a convenient supermarket for people who prepare their own meals, as the products are stocked in large quantities.
4 IGA
This is a high-end supermarket in Australia.
They sell products that other supermarkets don’t sell.
I have never been to this supermarket, but it is recommended for those who are particular about food.
What are the characteristics of the four major supermarkets?
1 Coles
Good freshness of fruits.
In Coles, they have a strict screening process before they ship fruits, and they sell the freshest fruits.
That’s why supermarkets are stocked with fresh products, and consumers trust them!
I also used to eat fruit from Kohl’s during breaks at language school.
There is a sale every Wednesday.
There is a free flyer at the entrance of Coles.
The flyer introduces a different product sale every week.
Some of the items are half off, so be sure to check them out!
2 Woolworth
A wide range of private brands
Other supermarkets have their own private brands, but Woolworth’s has some great products.
I recommend the sour cream potato chips in particular, as they are almost as good as Pringles.
Discounted bread in the evening
Woolworth’s offers a discount on bread in the evening.
Depending on the item, this can be a very good deal, so I highly recommend it!
Meat discounts
Personally, I find that Woolworths has a high discount rate on meat.
If you go there just before the expiration date, you can buy meat at a discount, so if you cook for yourself, go there.
3 ALDI
A hearty meat pie
One of Australia’s most famous dishes is meat pie, which is sold in many supermarkets.
However, the meat pies at this supermarket are the most generous in volume.
It’s also easy to cook. If you have an oven, just bake it and it’s ready to eat!
1kg of French Fries
French fries are popular with children and adults alike, but in Australia you can save a lot of money by frying them at home.
The price is less than 200 yen for 1kg, and there are so many different kinds that you will never get bored.
I used to buy them all the time while I was in Sydney!
Cereal in large quantities
Cereal is one of the most popular breakfast foods, but it is expensive if it is made by a famous company.
However, ALDI’s cereals are different.
They have their own products, so you can buy it at a cheaper price.
They also have a large quantity, so the more you eat, the more you save.
4 IGA
This supermarket is smaller than the others, but they change the products they sell depending on the area.
It is said that this is why the local people have loved this supermarket for a long time.
Check the supermarket sales on the app!
Each supermarket in Australia has weekly sales.
It’s a hassle to find out what’s on sale every time, isn’t it?
Well, there’s a handy app I’d like to introduce to you!
It’s called Lasoo, and it’s an app that allows you to easily view flyers from all the major stores in Australia!
It’s easy to use, and the information is updated weekly, so you can check the store’s information whenever you want.
If you’re going to live in Australia, I recommend you download it!
Why ALDI is the only choice when it comes to cheap prices!
Basically, other supermarkets have sales to attract customers, but ALDI is attractive because their prices are always low.
I think they keep their prices low by selling their own products, thus cutting down on unnecessary costs.
Frozen foods are also always inexpensive, so I used to buy them often as I was cooking for myself.
I recommend ALDI pizzas, where you can get a whole pizza for as little as 500 yen!
I was shocked when I saw it for the first time because pizza is too expensive in Japan.
I didn’t know about this supermarket when I first came to Australia, but after I found out about it, I went there all the time!
In Australia, where prices are high, I am very grateful.
Summary
- Each supermarket has its own characteristics.
- The most recommended supermarket is ALDI.
